Incubation time of St. Louis encephalitis virus in Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say from infection to 1st transmission by mosquito bite was found to have a relationship to mean temperature, within the range 20–30°C, expressed approximately by the equation (T–17)D = 109 in which T = °C, D = days. Similarly, blood digestion time in the range 10-30°C may be calculated by the equation (T-5)D = 50. Blood digestion-virus incubation time ratios revealed the optimum mean temperature to be approximately 30°C. Survival of the mosquito, under experimental conditions, to completion of incubation was also optimum at mean 30°C, provided the mean maximum temperature did not exceed 37°C and the associated rh did not drop below 54%. A rh of 37% at 37°C proved to be adverse.
