This article consists of an application of segmented labor market theorizing to the work domain of college and university teaching. Secondary analyses of the Carnegie Commission's 1969 National Surveys of Higher Education-Faculty Study Subsample and Statistics Canada's Full-time University Teacher's File, 1977-78 to 1986-87 and a selected review of the literature are used to present a portrait of those in the external labor market (who teach outside tenure or tenure-stream appointments). This portrait includes demographic characteristics, teaching load, level of remuneration, and commitment to research. The extensiveness and nature of this teaching and the experiences of two specific categories within this market-new Ph.D.s seeking entry to the tenure stream and those nearing retirement-are discussed.
