The study ranges over the first twenty years of Bangladesh and includes several chapters which examine the causes of the formation of Bangladesh during the Pakistan years. Among the personalities featured are Fazlul Haq, H. S. Suhrawardy, Khawaja Nazimuddin Mujibur Rahman and Z. A. Bhutto.
