This article will review the theory of stigma and discuss its historical background. It will examine social responses to previously stigmatized venereal diseases and compare these responses with social responses to HIV. An analysis will be done using McGrath's (1992) theoretical measures to determine the affects of the social response of stigma on the infectious disease of HIV.
