The Blended Wing Body is a tailless transport aircraft relying upon a full authority digital flight control system for stabilization, control, and trim. The control laws need an efficient control allocation scheme to minimize actuator rate, hinge moment, and horsepower requirements. A poorly designed control allocator may require excessively large control surfaces and reduce the center of gravity range for loadability. The control allocation is complicated by the lack of long coupled pitch effectors, the lack of dedicated trim devices, and the large number of coupled and redundant control surfaces. This paper discusses the control allocation challenges and the requirements that will be imposed on the design in order to be certain that the challenges are met.
