Four decades ago the effectiveness of a glycerin extract of adrenal gland was described in the publications of Oliver and Schafer (1). During the interim a similar extract of adrenal cortical material has been manufactured by a commercial firm as a stock preparation and two years ago it was brought to our attention as a potentially valuable medicament in the treatment of schizophrenia.& In previous publications (2) (3) we have discussed some effects arising from the oral administration of this substance as determined in schizophrenic subjects. Whether similar results would be obtained in normal individuals was explicitly left as an open question. This communication deals with a study devoted to an attack on that particular problem. As the outstanding property of the cortical material is its stimulating effect upon the blood pressure, it was decided at this juncture to investigate that feature alone.
