Abstract This paper examines the importance of Ph.D. program planning for preparing students for an academic career in accounting. The paper is based, in part, on a survey of directors of accounting Ph.D. programs, and provides some descriptive evidence, as well as normative approaches, to planning important dimensions of accounting Ph.D. programs. The thrust of the paper is to facilitate planning in a way that takes advantage of existing strengths in both the student and the program. The discussion should be helpful to students as well as Ph.D. program directors as a vehicle for evaluating the planning process.
