Abstract Tropical burning often occurs in remote areas of the world. Satellite remote sensing is the only practical solution for detecting and monitoring this burning. In this paper we demonstrate the capability of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration polar orbiting satellites for detecting tropical fire activity in the Manaus, Brazil area.
