Abstract

The NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) serves as the primary long-term archive for digital mission data, ground-based observations, and planetary analog laboratory and field data. Implementation of new AI-driven tools across the data archiving landscape is influencing development of planetary data archives. Through the development and use of the international archiving standard, PDS4, the PDS focuses on the creation of quality metadata as the infrastructure that will drive AI-tool development aiding planetary scientists to better archive, search & find, and ultimately use planetary data worldwide. Coupled with the move to cloud-based data storage and access, AI-enhanced tools will improve the usability of planetary data from all eras of space exploration.
