Abstract

This chapter establishes the theoretical foundation of the Mid-Latitude Oscillation Model. The central argument is that not all environmental pressures generate cognitive evolution. The predictable drought pressure of the African savanna constitutes “ineffective pressure” requiring only endurance, whereas the unpredictable winter-summer extreme reversal in East Asia’s mid-latitudes constitutes “effective pressure” demanding a fundamental mode switch in survival logic. Evidence is presented from three dimensions: (1) the Qinghai-Tibet and Taihang dual uplift that shaped East Asia’s closed-basin evolutionary template; (2) Guliya ice core δ¹⁸O records showing a ~12°C abrupt temperature decline during the last glacial, with the Tibetan Plateau responding more sensitively than Greenland; (3) loess dust records demonstrating independent centennial-scale variability in the East Asian winter monsoon. On this basis, the European glacial environment is defined as a “one-way abyss” (progressive deterioration, minor winter-summer reversal, physiological adaptation dominant), while East Asia is defined as a “two-way oscillation” (winter-summer switching, cognitive adaptation dominant). Critically, this chapter identifies Shandong as the focal point of this oscillation—the “force terminal” of the mid-latitude mold, where the winter-summer gradient reaches its maximum and cognitive pressure is most intense. The “effective vs. ineffective pressure” distinction established here serves as the axiomatic premise for the entire book. Drawing upon this multi-proxy dataset and formalised within a stochastic dynamical systems framework built around a Langevin equation with bistable potential, this chapter defines the European glacial palaeoenvironment as a one-way abyss regime — characterised by unidirectional, progressive climatic deterioration dominated by physiological adaptive evolution — and mid-latitude East Asia as a two-way oscillation regime, marked by alternating extreme winter–summer climate states that prioritise cognitive adaptive evolution. This mathematical formulation links mid-latitude oscillation to the predictive coding framework introduced in Chapter 1, rendering effective selective pressure a quantitatively definable regime generating testable predictions for archaeological behavioural complexity.
