This study provides the first immunohistochemical evidence of endogenous renin localized within neuronal cells of the mouse brain.
In order to clarify the nature and origin of renin-like activity in the brain, renin was localized immunohistochemically using specific anti-mouse submaxillary gland renin antibody. Renin immunopositive staining was observed in neuronal cells for the first time, indicating the existence of endogenous renin in the brain. It was localized in regions ofthe cerebellum, brain stem, hippocampus, and cortex. Renin immunopositive staining was also detected in the adenohypophysis, pineal, choroid plexus, and optic nerve. It was not seen in the neurohypophysis, area postrema, or subfornical organ.
