Key Points

  • Digital game addiction is significantly affected by home gaming environments and gender differences, particularly for boys.
  • Boys exhibited higher levels of digital game addiction, especially in the 10-11 age range, highlighting age-related vulnerabilities.
  • Data was collected through observational analysis involving 151 students over a year, demonstrating widespread issues in gaming among youths.
  • Findings underline the need for pediatric nurses to address gaming's impact on child development and advocate for supportive measures.

Abstract

Objective: Children and adolescents constitute the risk group for digital game addiction, which has become a widespread and important public health problem. This study was conducted to determine the factors that cause digital game addiction in children and adolescents aged 10-14 years studying in secondary schools. Methods: The data were completed with the participation of 151 students between March 20, 2021 and March 19, 2022. Results: The analysis showed that playing computer games at home made a significant difference in the levels of digital game addiction in boys as gender and in the 10-11 age group as age group. Conclusion: Based on the findings, pediatric nurses should investigate the negative impact of digital games on child development and provide education and counseling for the child and his/her family through education, counseling, supportive and advocacy roles.
