An annotated checklist of the Papilionoidea of the Murcia region (Spain) with new records, distribution and biological data (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea)

The Murcia region is located at the South-East corner of the Iberian Peninsula and has a great diversity of Lepidoptera fauna, as a zoogeographical crossroads and biodiversity hotspot with more than 850 butterflies and moth species recorded. In the present paper, based on an examination of museum specimens, published records and new samples, a comprehensive and critical species list of butterflies of the families Papilionidae, Hesperiidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae and Nymphalidae (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) is synthesised. In total, five families, seventeen subfamilies, 70 genera and 120 species have been recorded and these are listed, along with their collection data, literature references and biological data, including chorotype, voltinism, feeding patterns of larvae and the flight period in the study area. Speyeria aglaja (Linnaeus, 1758) is newly recorded for the Murcia region.
