Abstract

Social media today is rapidly becoming the hallmark of the 21st century. It forms an effective, disruptive innovation that has completely changed the way our world functions. This qualitative research study examines social media as a disruptive innovation, identifies its influence and impact on shaping societies, and attempts to explore several pros and cons of adopting and integrating social media across five key areas of society: communication, education, entertainment, social interaction, business, and marketing. Grounded in the frameworks of Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) and Christensen's Disruptive Innovation theories, this study utilizes secondary data to assess the multifaceted effects of social media on the five key critical dimensions of life, as stated above. The findings in this study reveal significant tension. On one hand, social media has democratized information and fostered global connectivity on an unprecedented scale. On the other hand, it presents serious challenges. New digital language norms often come at the expense of traditional interpersonal skills, while in education, the wealth of resources is counterbalanced by the pervasive risks of misinformation and declining attention spans. The entertainment and marketing sectors have been utterly transformed; yet, these transformations have also given rise to social isolation and negative mental health outcomes, which are directly tied to the very platforms affecting this change. Given that social media allows for both good and adverse consequences, this paper has concluded that social media truly is a double-edged sword. It provides powerful tools for connection and positive change, but these benefits are intertwined with critical issues like the erosion of personal well-being and the spread of falsehoods. Effectively navigating this new digital landscape requires a more balanced and critical approach from everyone involved.
