Abstract

ABSTRACT Sustainable Practices in Tourism Development are often beneficial to local economies, but they often present significant environmental challenges. This research evaluates the effects of sustainable tourism methods applied in Guangzhou city on the local economy and the natural environment at the same time. The research involves estimates of economic impacts, including job creation, income generation, and business gain, alongside estimates of environmental outcomes such as biodiversity, waste, and environmental protection. The mixed‐methods study used qualitative data from a sample of 30 individuals and quantitative data from a sample of 362 individuals. The study data were collected from tourism industry stakeholders, tourists visiting Guangzhou, environmental experts, and local community members. The study represents a novelty in the connection between the sustainable development of tourism and the empowerment and well‐being of the community to be gained. The findings indicate that sustainable tourism practices can offer economic growth for local communities. This would include the increase in availability and uptake of ecologically friendly travel options, including environmentally friendly renewable energy, waste systems, electric shuttle buses, and ecologically sustainable accommodation options offered by local businesses. It has increased local economic and community activity and job availability. Empowerment allows for the development of cultural heritage visions and for stewardship of the environment. If sustainable tourism practices are ingrained into the way of development in tourism, then they would have a big increase in the positive impacts that tourism development has on ecosystems, culture, and livelihoods. The focus of the study will expand understanding of how sustainability practices in tourism can be embedded and maximize the benefits of tourism development in increasing opportunities for the capacity of local economies and ecosystems. The theme of inclusion of sustainable practices in tourism development is vital to enriching the local community, which involves the opportunity for jobs.
