Key Points

  • Emerging organic bioelectronics combines ionic and electronic transport for biological-electronic interaction.
  • New semiconducting materials enhance functionalities in organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells.
  • Designing small molecules and polymers allows for effective biomarker sensing and ionic transport.
  • The advancement in materials aims to address specific needs within the organic electronics landscape.

Abstract

Semiconducting materials have played a pivotal role in the development and commercialisation of organic electronic applications such as organic light-emitting diodes and organic solar cells. More recently, exciting new directions have emerged within the broader field of organic electronics. One such example is the emerging field of organic bioelectronics where both ionic and electronic charge transport is required to efficiently couple the language of biology with that of electronics. In my talk, I will give examples of how we have contributed to the development of this emerging area by designing and synthesising new semiconducting small molecules and polymers that fulfil these requirements and address the need for new functionalities such as ion and biomarker sensing.
