Key Points

  • Remote work influences job satisfaction, impacting productivity and employee retention within organizations.
  • Key factors such as work-life balance and family-supportive supervisory practices shape job satisfaction outcomes.
  • Unobserved differences in job satisfaction may affect selection into various work-from-home arrangements.
  • High-productivity employees often secure more flexible remote work opportunities, influencing overall job satisfaction.

Abstract

Job satisfaction is a crucial element of the professional sphere, as it has the potential to influence the productivity, dedication, and retention of employees within an organization. Therefore, it is vital to understand the impact of remote work on employee job satisfaction. Scientific research has examined the elements that influence employee job satisfaction in the context of remote work. These characteristics include, but are not limited to, family-supportive supervisory practices, positive work-to-family spillover, and work–life balance. A key concern with analyses such as ours is that unobserved differences in job satisfaction or intent-to-leave are correlated with selection into different WFH arrangements. For example, higher productivity workers tend to have greater bargaining power (e.g., better outside options), thereby potentially enabling them to select into more flexible work arrangements.
