Abstract

The purpose of the article is to systematise printed materials about the work of Yaroslav Lopatynskyi. Research methodology. The following methods were used in the article: historicism – to highlight the composer’s work in the context of the development of the musical culture of Eastern Galicia in the late 19th – first third of the 20th century and the cultural traditions that developed during this period; analytical – to study materials and scientific research by Ukrainian scientists about the artist’s creative heritage; biographical – to reveal the main stages of the life and work of Yaroslav Lopatynskyi. The scientific novelty of the article is determined by its address to the little-studied topic of Galician musical culture, in particular, the clarification of researchers’ interest in the work of Ya. Lopatynskyi both in the first third of the 20th century and in our time. The article systematises materials about the composer’s work for the first time. Conclusions. Along with P. Bazhanskyi, Ya. Yaroslavenko, and M. Kumanovskyi, we can also include Ya. Lopatynskyi, a doctor by profession and a musician by vocation, to the galaxy of Galician amateur composers who successfully worked in the field of culture of the region. The artist created in various genres, but most clearly manifested himself in chamber and vocal, in the genesis of which is closely connected with folk song sources. This is due to the ethnic characteristics of the region, its traditions, and general cultural trends. Research interest in the composer’s work of Ya. Lopatynskyi testifies to the uniqueness of his productive thinking, the ability to combine medical practice with “related work”, which helped to reveal natural abilities, to create musical works based on Ukrainian national folklore, with which they are related by subject matter, characteristic artistic images, and musical intonations. This actualises the need to create an integrated study that would summarise the accumulated corpus of periodical materials and scientific research that reveal various aspects of Ya. Lopatynskyi’s work.
