Key Points

  • Transportation systems were developed to effectively address the fire control problem in California forests.
  • The project emphasizes the integration of transportation plans with comprehensive land-management strategies.
  • The methodology incorporates principles and theories tailored to the specific needs of northern California's pine forests.
  • The work reflects a pressing need for timely revisions and extensions of transportation plans due to emerging fire risks.

Abstract

Abstract The rapid revision, development, and extension of plans of transportation for California National Forests became a pressing problem with the advent of the emergency program. Accordingly, the work was undertaken as a major regional project. The principles and theories on which the work was based and the general procedure followed are briefly described as they were applied to the pine forests of northern California. Although the major emphasis was placed on the development of transportation systems to meet the fire control problem, the work was regarded as an integral part of comprehensive land-management planning.
