Abstract

Purpose The construction industry is subject to criticism due to its substantial utilization of resources and generation of waste. The concepts of circular economy (CE) and zero waste (ZW) present viable and sustainable solutions; however, achieving significant waste reduction remains a challenge. This paper investigates the barriers hindering the attainment of ZW production in the construction industry in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review was conducted, followed by expert assessment, to identify 24 potential barriers to ZW. A survey questionnaire was then used to solicit the views of construction professionals on the barriers to ZW production in the Ghanaian construction industry. Utilizing exploratory factor analysis, the responses were categorized into four barriers: infrastructure and technology, regulation and awareness, management and planning and operational and implementation barriers. The identified barriers were objectively ranked and prioritized through the application of a fuzzy synthetic evaluation. Findings The findings reveal that the main barriers impacting ZW production are those associated with infrastructure and technology, regulation and awareness, management and planning and operational and implementation issues. The results emphasize the importance of implementing a comprehensive approach that includes advancements in technology, more stringent regulations, increased awareness, strategic planning and improved operations to facilitate the shift toward ZW production. Originality/value Barriers to integrating CE principles and attaining ZW in the Ghanaian construction sector are presented to assist key stakeholders and policymakers in addressing these challenges while also achieving ZW.
