Abstract

The value of language learning has been questioned by many including policymakers due to the recent emergence of generative artificial intelligence technology. To address this concern, this systematic review examines the contributions of multilingualism to individual growth, aiming to rearticulate the importance of language learning. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we identify and analyse 105 journal articles published between 2020 and 2025 from the Web of Science database. Six key aspects of individual growth are identified: well-being and identity, cognitive ability, professional development, linguistic skills, intercultural communicative competence, and academic performance. The findings suggest that learning languages not only empowers individuals to achieve multifaceted personal growth (e.g. linguistic, cognitive) but also helps foster social inclusion and equity across a variety of educational, institutional and social contexts. The review calls on the public, including policymakers, to recognise language learning as a public good that nurtures well-rounded individuals and strengthens society as a whole.
