Key Points

  • Islam plays a central role in the 2025 German elections, often framed in a contentious context, raising challenges.
  • The position of political parties on Islam reveals significant differences in their election programs and priorities.
  • Debates surrounding Islamic issues are expected to increase in intensity, with parties taking tougher stances.
  • The political agenda does not prioritize addressing the needs of the Muslim community, Germany's second largest religious group.

Abstract

The relationship between religion and politics not only remains relevant in modern political discourse, but also acquires additional significance during election campaigns. At the same time, Islam is increasingly becoming one of the central categories of political discourse and interparty differences in Western Europe. The German federal elections of 2025 make it possible to clarify the positions of the main political parties on religion in general and Islam in particular, and to fix the difference in existing approaches to solving accumulated social problems. The article examines the election programs of the established political parties in Germany and their positions on religious policy and Islam on the eve of the 2025 parliamentary elections, and makes a forecast on the further development of state-Islamic relations in Germany in the coming years. In conclusion, it is concluded that Islam is highly politically engaged during the 2025 election campaign, most often in a conflict and problematic connotation. Solving the pressing problems of the Muslim community, the second largest religious community in Germany, does not meet the priority agenda of political parties. In the coming 21st legislative period, it is predicted that socio-political debates on Islamic issues will remain high, including between parties, and political positions on domestic Islam will become tougher.
