Abstract

Published and unpublished records of butterfly species found in Lekgalameetse Provincial Park, Limpopo Province, South Africa were compiled into an annotated checklist for the Park. This list comprises 268 species – 12 Papilionidae, 36 Pieridae, 98 Nymphalidae, 73 Lycaenidae and 49 Hesperiidae. The topography and vegetation of the Park is summarized and the history of butterfly collecting in the region is briefly given. The cultural and political history of the Lekgalameetse area is outlined. Interesting aspects of the butterfly fauna are discussed.
