(De)Bordering between Human and Non-Human Bodies in Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun

This research paper explores various circumstances of de bordering between human and non-human bodies in Ishiguru’s Klara and the Sun. In this novel, Klara represents non-human body whereas Josie, her family members and others embody human bodies. The article investigates the ways in which Klara, the Artificial Friend or Robot, behaves similarly to human beings and serves to conflate the roles of AI and human bodies. It goes on to examine the various settings in which human and non-human bodies border and de-border inside the storytelling. It contends that AI’s emotional complexity, interaction with human beings and perceptions of the world reinforce to unfold the bordering and de bordering between human and non- human bodies. For this purpose, this study primarily employs the perspectives of Donna Haraway and N.K. Hayles about cyborgs and post human.
