Abstract

This paper aims to take writer’s stand about the pointing out and criticism about an argument, have been take place lately, for the warfare of Maeso-seong Fortress writer’s previous point of view about it. At the present moment, about the decision of the location of Maeso-seong Fortress, the two arguments are conflicting between Yeoncheon Daejeonri-sanseong Fortress and Yangju Daemo-sanseong Fortress. And about a truth about the warfare of Maeso-seong Fortress, the two arguments are colliding between the opinion to emphasize Silla’s autonomous role and the other opinion that the Tang dynasty abandoned the warfare. However there are some studies, are published lately, with some new opinions about the battle of Maeso-seong Fortress and Chiljung-seong Fortress, Feb, 675, in the warfare of Maeso-seong Fortress. The key point of those opinions are founded on 『Samguk-sagi』, and they are that two battles Feb and Sep, 675 were originally one event, or the battle Feb, 675 was not existed. But on the writer’s examination, the former seems an unreasonable argument to support the theory, that Maeso-seong was located on Yeoncheon Daejeonri-sanseong. And the latter’s conclusion is considered to interpret the Chinese historical records in accordance with the record of 『Samguk-sagi』, that were published later. It’s reasonable to consider the purpose of the battle of the Cheon-seong Fortress were on both side of the supply and attack (amphibious warfare), and there were also another purpose the baking for retreat junst in time of emergency. So, I think that It is not one or the other, but both. Those new studies have the sides, that are overlooking these details. While Tang dynasty didn’t attain those goals in each battle, Silla won a victory through considering date and weather, and a leading capacity to attack enemy’s weak point with insistence. From this perspective, we can understand the stature of the warfare of Maeso-seong Fortress, and reconfirm the location of Maeso-seong Fortress more likely to be Yangju, not Yeoncheon. It’s the gist of this paper.
