Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the entrepreneurial environment. In particular, we examine the moderating effect of cross-country differences in the ease of starting a business, which refers to media attention to entrepreneurship and ease of access to entrepreneurship. The results of the empirical analysis using GEM data are as follows. We find that there are mean differences between countries in the perceived ease of starting a business, media interest in starting a business, and perceived opportunity for starting a business. In the case of entrepreneurial opportunity awareness, China, the United States, and Korea ranked first. When we examined the impact of ease of starting a business and media interest in starting a business on the perception of startup opportunities, we found that both of them had a positive effect on the perception of startup opportunities. The results of the moderating effect test on the differences between countries in the effects of ease of starting a business and media interest in starting a business on the perception of entrepreneurial opportunities showed that there was a difference in the size of the effect in the order of the U.S., China, and Korea in the case of ease of starting a business, and a difference in the size of the effect in the order of Korea, China, and the U.S. in the case of media interest in starting a business. These results confirm that there are differences in the impact of entrepreneurial environment factors by country, and they provide practical implications for policy measures to revitalize entrepreneurship.
