Abstract

(Abstracted from N Engl J Med 2024;390:242–253) Passage of the bacteria Treponema pallidum through the placenta is a known cause of congenital syphilis and continues to represent a global disease burden. Since 2001, rates of syphilis have increased in individuals of reproductive age and in infants, with rates reaching their highest in nearly 30 years in 2021.
