Abstract

Significance At first glance, the economic performance observed last year seems impressive. However, the robust growth rate concealed many of the country's endemic economic flaws. Much of the strong performance was due to vital assistance given by Russia. The financial health of many enterprises continues to deteriorate. Impacts Belarus's precarious economic situation will make it even more dependent on Russia for economic survival. Minsk will be forced to seek closer contacts with countries outside the Eurasian Economic Union to boost flagging investment. Chinese firms will be encouraged to expand their presence in Belarus and concentrate on investment in manufacturing rather than logistics.
