Abstract

Significance Droughts threaten knock-on effects for areas without direct water scarcity challenges, in the form of food price pressures, increased irregular migration from displaced communities, and disruption to water-sensitive services such as cloud-based computing. Impacts Water scarcity will continue to exacerbate conflict risks and challenges for global supply chains and food access. Nature-based solutions such as regenerative agriculture, agroforestry and river replenishment will gain increasing attention. Developing states will request more development finance from wealthy counterparts for construction and improvement of water infrastructure.
