Abstract

Abstract Urban green spaces (UGS) are essential in fostering sustainable urban development and mitigating the adverse impacts of rapid urbanization. This study applies a multicriteria analysis approach, integrating Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, and Multicriteria Analysis to identify and evaluate potential green space development areas in selected wards of Thu Duc City (formerly District 9). The study’s results indicate that 47.2% of the total area meets the minimum standards for UGS development outlined in QCVN 01:2021/BXD. Among the evaluated criteria, NDVI emerged as the most critical factor, with a weight of 0.34, underscoring the importance of vegetation density in determining suitable areas for the planning of green space. The areas classified as highly suitable, moderately suitable, and suitable for the planning of green space represent 17.96%, 15.28%, and 13.96%, respectively, highlighting the potential to develop large parks, camping areas, and outdoor activity zones. Smaller areas can be used for small gardens, greenery streets, and family green spaces. Most of the wards, particularly Long Phuoc, Long Thanh My, Truong Thanh, and Tang Nhon Phu A, exhibit favourable conditions, with more than 20% of their areas considered highly suitable. These wards present significant potential for green space development. The study achieves its objectives and provides valuable reference material for land and environmental planning authorities while proposing strategies for developing and expanding green spaces in Thu Duc City and nationwide.
