Changes to transfer portal rules create opportunities, challenges for athletics departments

Over the past few years, the NCAA's transfer portal has become both a significant and often critiqued aspect of college sport. The portal, initially designed to streamline how student‐athletes could transfer from one institution to another, has sparked controversy over issues surrounding student‐athletes’ commitment to their school (especially in this name, image, and likeness era), team culture, an organization's recruitment practices, and the overall state of amateur athletics. To help address the concerns held by critics of the transfer portal, the NCAA Division I Council voted in favor of reducing the options available for student‐athletes by eliminating the spring transfer window.
