Abstract

In Vietnam, Lumpy skin disease (LSD) cases have been reported over the last two years, and informa-tion on the epidemiology of the disease is rare. A cross-sectional surveillance study was conducted from November 2020 to August 2023 in three districts in Lang Son Province to estimate LSDV prevalence and assess its associated risk factors at the herd level. The number of collected cattle households was 97. The apparent and true prevalence of LSDV at the household level was 28 .87% (95% CI: 20.79–38.55%) and 31.31% (95% CI: 22.24–42.19%). The management practice risks were the replacement of new cattle from outside (P<0.01), the insect bites (P<0.01), and using communal dam water (P=0.03). Cattle nasal swabs and DNA plasmids are appropriate materials and positive controls in screening tests for LSD surveillance. Further surveillance studies involving a large study population, longitudinal studies, and a well-optimised real-time PCR are needed. To improve knowledge about LSD and biosecurity practices, the development of handbooks, flyers, or lessons for educating cattle owners and local veterinary staff is also needed.
