Key Points

  • The aim is to provide data for preprocessing satellite imagery to improve detection and identification of marine mammals.
  • Data compiled from various DEMs and high-resolution images for specific marine mammal habitats.
  • Included coarse-scale and fine-scale DEMs for Año Nuevo, Cape Cod Bay, and Somerset.
  • Supplementary materials include necessary libraries for image processing.
  • Provided DEMs improve the accuracy of marine mammal detection.
  • High-resolution satellite images aid in the identification of species in specified locations.

Abstract

Data used to run scripts provided in the supplementary material for the manuscript titled: From Pixels to Marine Mammals: Open-Source Preprocessing Workflow for Maxar’s Level 1B Satellite Imagery to Enhance Detection and Identification. The zipped folders included in this repository contain the following files: 1: glo30ₑllipsoidalconversioncoarseDEM. zip - Contains three coarse-scale Copernicus GLO-30 DEMs that are elipsoid corrected - one for Año Nuevo (pinnipeds), Cape Cod Bay (North Atlantic right whales) and Somerset (beluga whales). 2: EarthDEMfineDEM. zip - Contains three EarthDEM fine scale DEMs that are ajusted for ellipsoidal height- one for Año Nuevo, Cape Cod Bay and Somerset. 3: VHRImages. zip - Contains three MAXAR very-high resolution images - one for Año Nuevo (pinnipeds), Cape Cod Bay (North Atlantic right whales) and Somerset (beluga whales). All images are cited as MAXAR@YEAR and are provided in the manuscript. 4: gdal-3. 11. 3. zip - Contains the library needed to access the brovey pan sharpening as applied in the manuscript - Also available online.
