Abstract

Modern intimate relationships fail less due to lack of love and more due to persistent misinterpretation of internal states. Verbal communication, while central to relational repair, is often insufficient when emotional experiences are pre-verbal, suppressed, or distorted by memory and bias. This paper proposes a speculative yet ethically grounded neurotechnological concept: the Cognitive Drift Interface (CDI) — a consent-based, bidirectional brain–machine interface designed to allow partners to temporarily experience selected cognitive-emotional states of one another. Unlike surveillance-oriented or unilateral neurotechnologies, the CDI operates only under mutual approval and limited temporal windows, aiming to restore empathy rather than extract truth. This paper explores the psychological rationale, technical architecture, ethical safeguards, and therapeutic implications of such a system.
