Abstract

This is a systematic review which seeks to find, assess, and summarize the findings on the prevalence, serotype distribution, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and genetic determinants of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella species in chicken eggs worldwide. The review is based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach to prevalence review and follows PRISMA 2020 reporting guidelines. The search databases will be PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts, ProQuest, and African Journals Online (AJOL). The JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist of Prevalence Studies will be used in conducting quality assessment. The narrative synthesis approach will be used to summarize the results on Salmonella contamination, serotypes, antimicrobial resistance pattern, and resistance genes (blaTEM, tetA, qnr, sul1, and others) in chicken eggs in various geographical locations and production systems. The review will guide food safety interventions and antimicrobial stewardship interventions in the One Health.
