Key Points

  • The aim is to assess how Doppler Weather Radar can accurately predict high rainfall and flooding during the monsoon season.
  • Utilized Doppler Weather Radar-derived products such as VVP_2 and PPI_V.
  • Conducted continuous observations of wind speed and storm structure.
  • Evaluated forecasting capabilities for real-time insights into storm patterns.
  • Doppler Weather Radar provides accurate insights into high rainfall periods.
  • Significant enhancement in short-term forecasting capabilities was observed.
  • Timely nowcasts were made possible, aiding in disaster preparedness.

Abstract

The present study examines the role of Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in accurately predicting periods of high rainfall and potential flooding during the monsoon season over the Gangetic West Bengal region. By utilizing DWR-derived products such as VVP₂ and PPIV, the research highlights how continuous observations of wind speed, direction, and storm structure significantly enhance short-term forecasting capabilities. The findings demonstrate that DWR data provides real-time insights into convective development, storm intensification, and movement patterns, enabling forecasters to issue timely and reliable nowcasts. This study underscores the operational importance of DWR in improving disaster preparedness, minimizing weather-related risks, and strengthening early warning systems in monsoon-affected areas.
