Acrocalymma Cercidis sp. nov. and Two New Records of Acrocalymma Associated with Fabaceae in China

Abstract

Acrocalymma is the only genus in Acrocalymmaceae (Dothideomycetes, Ascomycota), which consists of species from terrestrial and freshwater habitats. To enhance and supplement existing knowledge of saprophytic fungi associated with Fabaceae hosts, this study collected three Acrocalymma specimens from three Fabaceae plants. Three Acrocalymma specimens were identified as one novel species and two known species by using morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analyses of multi‐loci (internal transcribed spacer region of the nrDNA, translation elongation factor 1‐alpha, small subunit nuclear rRNA gene and part of the large subunit nuclear rRNA gene) sequence data. Phylogenetic analysis showed one collection from our study, as a novel species, Acrocalymma cercidis sp. nov. Acrocalymma cercidis differs from its closely related taxa by the shape, size and septation of the conidia. In addition, A. chuxiongense and A. arenga are described from their anamorph for the first time. Senna pendula and Dalbergia hupeana are reported as new host records for A. chuxiongense and A. arenga , respectively. Based on a systematic study of specimens collected from China, this research describes and identifies a new species of Acrocalymma , thereby extending the known species diversity of this genus. Notably, this study clarifies the connection between the teleomorph and anamorph stages of two known species. In summary, the present study expands and contributes to the species diversity in Acrocalymma and life cycle in China.
