Key Points

  • The research aims to investigate the association between genetically predicted artificial sweeteners and stroke susceptibility.
  • Utilized Mendelian randomization to infer causal relationships
  • Evaluated the impact of artificial sweeteners, focusing on specific types like those in tea
  • Adjusted for potential confounders such as BMI and beverage consumption
  • Identified links between certain artificial sweeteners and small vessel or cardioembolic strokes
  • Noted that associations diminished when adjusting for BMI or tea consumption
  • Indicated potential confounding effects of body weight and beverage habits

Abstract

This MR study indicated that artificial sweeteners, particularly those added to tea and sucralose metabolites, were associated with small vessel and cardioembolic stroke, respectively. However, these associations were attenuated after adjusting for BMI or tea consumption, indicating potential confounding by adiposity or beverage habits. Findings should be interpreted cautiously and warrant further investigation.
