Abstract

This essay explores the importance of social ties and informal relational structures within organizations as a key driver of workplace engagement, innovation, and well-being. Drawing on sociological theory and contemporary workplace observations, the paper examines how communication, trust, and peer recognition form an essential “social layer” that supports formal organizational systems. Based on qualitative insights and interviews with innovation and business leaders across the Nordic region, the study highlights how weak connectivity between teams, functions, and partners can slow innovation and reduce employee motivation. The paper argues that strengthening peer-to-peer relations, recognition practices, and everyday collaboration can improve both performance and workplace satisfaction. The essay contributes to discussions on the future of work, hybrid collaboration, and human-centered organizational design. It proposes that integrating sociological insights into digital tools and management practices can help organizations build resilient, connected cultures and more effective innovation processes.
