Abstract

This study developed a magnolol delivery system (Mag@UiO-66) using UiO-66 nanoparticles and evaluated its multifunctional properties. Mag@UiO-66 was successfully synthesized with a high drug loading efficiency of 76.37% ± 0.61% and provided sustained release of magnolol. It demonstrated effective antibacterial activity against Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, with minimum bactericidal concentrations of 0.165, 0.313, and 0.313 mg/ml, respectively. The material showed negligible cytotoxicity to human periodontal ligament cells at these concentrations. In a rat bone defect model, Mag@UiO-66 exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effects by modulating TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10 expression and promoted bone healing. Therefore, with the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic properties, the Mag@UiO-66 holds promise for treating oral infections and repairing bone defects.
