Association of triglyceride-glucose index and sleep duration in people aged 25—44 years old

Abstract

Objective. To establish the association of the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) as a biomarker of insulin resistance and sleep duration in the young population (25—44 years) of Novosibirsk. Materials and methods. Screening of a representative sample of the population aged 25-44 years of the Oktyabrsky district of Novosibirsk was conducted at the Research Institute of Internal and Preventive Medicine, Branch of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2013—2017 (403 males, mean age 34±0.4 years, 71% response, and 531 females, mean age 35±0.4 years, 72% response). The screening was carried out according to the protocol of the WHO MONICA international program. The TyG index was calculated using two formulas (TyG1 and TyG2). Results. When comparing the medians of TyG1 and TyG2 across different sleep durations, the TyG1 and TyG2 values were higher in the upper decile (≥90) for persons with 5—6 hours of sleep than for those with 7—8 hours of sleep. This pattern was found in both sexes: 9.68 9.45; 10.00 and 5.18 5.07; 5.35 compared to 9.43 9.30; 9.67 and 5.06 4.99; 5.18 (p=0.01), and in males: 9.75 9.52; 10.13 and 5.22 5.10; 5.41 compared to 9.47 9.32; 9.7 and 5.08 5.00; 5.2 (p=0.013). In the upper decile (≥90), the probability of short sleep duration increases with each increase in TyG by 1 unit, from OR=4.2 in model 1 to OR=9.4 in both sexes, and in males, from OR=6.04 to OR=16.6 (p<0.05). Conclusion. An association was found between short sleep duration and an increase in the triglyceride-glucose index.
