Abstract

The influence of wind load fluctuations at different scales on the dynamic behavior of transmission lines was studied based on field observations of wind speed and finite element methods. The results indicate that turbulent-scale wind load fluctuations need to be considered in the prediction of transmission line vibration, which specifically refers to the displacement in the incoming flow direction. Among them, large-scale wind load fluctuations dominate the large-scale vibration of transmission lines. Although small-scale wind load fluctuations show a weak correlation with the small-scale vibration of transmission lines, they exert a significant influence on the mean value and standard deviation of the overall vibration response of transmission lines. The low-frequency components of vibration responses at different positions along the transmission line exhibit a high degree of correlation. In addition, the forces imposed by transmission lines on insulators are also highly correlated with turbulent-scale wind load fluctuations. Our results indicate that the design of windproof measures for transmission lines and insulators should take into account the effects of turbulent-scale wind loads, while the large-scale vibration of transmission lines can be predicted on the basis of large-scale wind load fluctuations.
