VKVoges KevinHHHernandha Rahmandhika Firdauzha HaryBMBerthault Manon

Key Points

  • To define the design specifications for pouch cells used in battery applications, focusing on assembly and recyclability.
  • Analyzed requirements for small and large battery cells.
  • Specified design criteria based on material parameters and production processes.
  • Considered recyclability in the design for easier disassembly.
  • Established distinct design needs for larger pouch cells.
  • Identified critical components impacting cell assembly.
  • Outlined a framework for improving recyclability in battery design.

Abstract

The definition of the cell design is crucial for each battery type. Small cells have different requirements compared to larger (higher capacity) cells in terms of format, stack size, cell compression system, etc. Another essential factor of the cell design is the devices and equipment used in producing electrodes/separators and the further processing to battery cells, which already confine the freedom in the cell design. Additionally, developing new battery technologies enables the possibility of adjusting the design to improve the recyclability of the different cell components from the beginning, e.g. by simplifying the disassembly process. Therefore, WP4, with tasks 4.1 and 4.3, aims to specify the cell design of the pouch cells that will be produced in ADVAGEN. The design is based on the assumptions and specifications derived in WP2, the material and component parameters from WP3 (e.g., capacity of the developed active material, optimised electrode thickness, or active material loading), and ABEE's device and pilot line requirements.
