Voices of Harari: The Sociocultural Power of Proverbs in Fostering Identity and Community Values

This study, titled "Voices of Harar: The Sociocultural Power of Proverbs in Fostering Identity and Community Values", explores the contextual functions of Harari proverbs as a vital element of Ethiopia’s oral tradition and cultural heritage. Prompted by the growing concern that Harari proverbs are gradually fading from everyday use, the research aims to document, analyze, and interpret these proverbs within their socio-cultural settings. Employing a qualitative, descriptive case study design, the study applies contextual and functional theoretical approaches to uncover the deeper meanings and roles of proverbs in Harari society. The findings reveal that Harari proverbs serve multifaceted functions expressing religious beliefs, reinforcing social bonds, addressing moral and ethical conduct, portraying gender dynamics, and providing historical commentary. They also function as tools for community cohesion, education, cultural preservation, and the transmission of values. This research underscores the enduring power of proverbs to reflect and shape identity, promote inclusion, and build resilience within the Harari community. It advocates for the preservation and revitalization of this rich oral heritage as a means to safeguard cultural identity and support intergenerational knowledge transfer.
