TSTamaki SUMNERTITakuya INOUE

Key Points

  • The study aims to understand how granule size and initial topography affect the erosion process of potholes formed by swirling currents.
  • Conducted hydraulic model experiments to simulate pothole formation.
  • Analyzed the impact of different granule sizes on erosion patterns.
  • Examined the role of initial topography on the erosion process.
  • Smaller granules led to widespread erosion of inner walls and bottoms, particularly on the downstream side.
  • Larger granules resulted in concentrated erosion on the upstream side within a limited area.
  • New potholes were also formed on the bottom, creating complex topographical features.
