Abstract

The recent remarkable development of colloidal chemistry has enabled the precise control of the particle in shape and size with a nanometer level. Particularly, as for tens of nanometers of silica nanoparticles consisting of siloxane bonds, various kinds of nanostructures such as mesoporous particle, hollow rod, and Rattle-type particle have been reported these days and they are highly expected as new functional nanomaterials in industrial and biological areas by taking advantage of their specific physical and chemical properties. Silica nanoparticles are extremely attractive materials due to the excellent solvent dispersibility from water to various organic solvents, reactive functional groups(silanol groups)on the particle surface, and good biocompatibility. Their hybridization with organic and inorganic compounds is desired for further functionalization. In this paper,“ hybridization” is defined as the creation of new function by combining different type of materials, not as simple mixture. In addition, it is also necessary to maintain the properties based on nanoparticle after the hybridization. Here, the syntheses of organic-inorganic and inorganic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles(nanorods)based on silica performed by the author’s group in recent years and their functions added by the hybridization are mainly described. Specifically, some important points to note in the chemical modification of silica nanoparticles are summarized.
