Key Points

  • The main aim is to analyze the spatial distribution of extreme rainfall and discharge in Japan to assess flood risks.
  • Evaluated extreme rainfall across Japan and calculated extreme discharge for first-grade rivers.
  • Assessed the relationship between watershed area and runoff coefficients.
  • Developed rainfall distributions that generate extreme discharge at arbitrary locations.
  • Conducted flood damage assessments through flood inundation analysis.
  • Regions in southern Kyushu to Kii and eastern Shikoku showed extensive areas exceeding 700mm/day of extreme rainfall.
  • In smaller watersheds, there was significant variability in extreme runoff coefficients.
  • For watershed areas above 4,000-5,000 km², the extreme runoff coefficient converged around 0.20-0.35.
