Abstract

We analyzed the gazing characteristics of walkers in spaces surrounded by walls and found the following main findings: (1) “No walls” led to greater variations in walking pace, compared to the other spatial settings. (2) In spaces with “no walls”, “walls on both sides”, and “walls on both sides with a roof”, the participants tended to gaze at objects near the center. (3) The presence of a wall/roof significantly reduces the frequency of gazing at the central passageway. In a space with only one wall, walkers gaze at the wall at a significantly higher rate.
