Abstract

This paper explores the history of museum acceptance in Japan, focusing on The Museum of Shiga Prefecture, Biwako Bunkakan. The Shiga Prefectural Cultural Industry Center, opened in 1948, aimed to integrate culture and industry. Proposed in 1959 and opened in 1961, Biwako Bunkakan was a complex including an art museum, history museum, and aquarium. It attracted many visitors and contributed to regional cultural preservation and development. Although closed in 2008, its adaptive, community-focused approach offers valuable insights for the future of cultural facilities. This study illustrates one approach to flexible, community-oriented cultural facilities in the preservation and development of regional heritage.
