Abstract: For centuries, vocal instruction has often used the master–apprentice relationship as the mainstay of pedagogical practice. However, new awareness around relational power dynamics, mental health and trauma–related responses in lessons, and the importance of culturally responsive teaching are gradually shifting this paradigm. The purpose of this article is to introduce the SAFE method of vocal instruction, which emphasizes aspects of security , agency , function , and exploration in the studio relationship. These aspects can be facilitated by teachers using principles from nonviolent communication and can be strengthened by cultivating empathy and compassion for oneself and others.
